Re-engaging Nursing Staff in Your Stroke Program

The shortage of stable nursing staff fueled by the COVID-19 Pandemic and has challenged stroke program leaders.  Nurses with knowledge and skill in the care of patients with stroke is central to a stable and quality stroke program. However, the origins of the shortage of nurses in recent years remains a matter of debate.  While many nursing leaders cite concerns about the nursing pipeline and call for colleges to produce more nursing graduates, others call on healthcare leaders to improve working conditions to keep educated and skilled nurses at the bedside.  Statistics suggest that plenty of nurses are graduating from schools and universities across the US but choosing to leave bedside nursing for advanced degrees or other careers outside of nursing.  Regardless of the cause, stroke program leaders are challenged to engage nurses who are new to the organization and/or new to the profession in their stroke programs.
